Con Dao Island sheltered brave revolutionary spirits of the Vietnamese people. More than 22, 000 prisoners who dedicated their lives to national independence were incarcerated on the isolated island of Con Dao.

The best time to visit Con Dao Island is from March to June, when the sea is calm. The ocean around Con Dao Island is a heaven for sea life and the splendid forest cloaks the land. This is ecotourism at its best. Clean, smooth sand banks, blue sea, dolphins jumping and racing after boats, tropical almond trees swinging in a cool sea breeze, peaceful narrow roads, and forest covering most of the island, make Con Dao seem like heaven to visitors from far and wide.

Con Dao is one of the few places in Vietnam that is home to rare dugong, sea turtles, and dolphins, and to varieties of orchids found nowhere else in the country. In addition, the island has large and diverse coral reefs comparable to the most famous ecotourism spots in the region.

   Today Con dao has great historical import and attracts Vietnamese and increasing numbers of foreign tourists to the renovated prisons. Prisoners were kept in extremely overcrowded conditions on the island and as many as 20,000 are believed to have died here and this can be relived here Con Dao is part of a maritime and national park and is made up of 20 or so islands. The islands are mostly rugged and still have a lot of original forest cover and associated flora and fauna. The most famous indigenous animal is the dugong or sea cow although it is rarely seen. Several species of rare squirrel and apes are found here and there is an important breeding program for turtles on Banh Canh island near to Con Dao island. The islands have very nice beaches, great swimming and snorkeling opportunities and a very relaxed, colonial feel to them. Rainforest hikes can be booked through the National Park Office. Most hikes require a guide, but for good reason. Many of the trails are unmarked, so having a native guide is essential. Travel Tips

•  With the traveler who wants to visit Vietnam’s Con Dao archipelago, May is an ideal time to visit this island.

•  From September to January, the weather is bad so swimming; snorkeling and diving activities aren’t allowed. If you want to do these activities, let’s come after January.

•  There are no taxis and virtually no “xe om” (motorbike taxis) on the islands. So if you want to get around, it’s easy to hire a small motorbike. Prices are somewhat higher than on the mainland.

•  Be prepared psychology for accommodation – the best hotel on the island is lower than the local standard.

•  If you want to try fruit on the island, banana and coconut are always ready to serve.

•  Don’t waste time to looking for another cuisine on the island, there is a best choice for you: seafood

•  There is a good fruit and vegetable market in Con Son town that starts early - 6am or so. Prices are cheap and the locals don\'t seem to overcharge foreign purchasers
